A New Chapter for Senior Living: Introducing Mullen Residences at the Highlands

The historic Mullen Home site in Denver’s West Highlands neighborhood is about to embark on an exciting transformation. What was once home to the Little Sisters of the Poor’s century-long mission of caring for older adults will soon become Mullen Residences at the Highlands—a vibrant new senior living community that honors the past while embracing the future.

Honoring Legacy, Embracing Innovation

The Archdiocese of Denver has partnered with Christian Living Communities (CLC) to reimagine this beloved 3629 W. 29th Avenue location. The vision is ambitious yet respectful, creating a community that honors and celebrates aging while preserving the site’s rich history.

“We invite the community to join us in shaping an inspiring future for older adults,” explains Jill Vitale-Aussem, President and CEO of Christian Living Communities. “Mullen Residences will honor a century-long legacy of compassion while embracing an age-positive vision for senior living—one that is vibrant, innovative, and empowering.”

A Community Designed for Life

When Mullen Residences opens its doors in 2029, residents will discover a full spectrum of living options thoughtfully designed to meet diverse needs:

Independent Living Apartments – Spacious homes for active seniors who want to maintain their independence while enjoying community amenities.

Assisted Living & Memory Care – Specialized support services delivered with dignity and expertise.

Town Center – A vibrant hub for social gatherings, dining, and community events.

The Grounds – Nestled on 8 acres of lush green walking paths and mature trees.

The development will seamlessly blend the site’s historic character with cutting-edge amenities. Residents can look forward to a comprehensive wellness center, a state-of-the-art theater for entertainment and cultural events, and numerous spaces designed to foster connection and engagement.

Looking Ahead

With construction expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, the Mullen Residences project is already generating considerable interest in the Denver area. The team is currently accepting reservations, allowing future residents to secure their place in this innovative community.

For families exploring senior living options or individuals planning for their own future, Mullen Residences represents a new model—one that views aging not as decline, but as an opportunity for continued growth, connection, and contribution.

Preserving the Past

One of the most meaningful aspects of this redevelopment is the commitment to preserving the iconic Old Main building. This historic structure, which houses the original chapel and other significant architectural features, will remain a centerpiece of the new community—ensuring that the site’s spiritual and historical legacy continues to inspire future generations.

The Little Sisters of the Poor operated at this location for more than a century, providing compassionate care for low-income older adults until their closure in 2022. Their dedication to serving Denver’s aging population has left an indelible mark on the community, one that Mullen Residences aims to honor.

Leadership Vision

The Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila shares the excitement surrounding this project: “The Archdiocese of Denver is delighted to offer such an extraordinary senior living option in the West Highlands. We are proud to collaborate with Christian Living Communities and Senior Housing Partners in this important redevelopment effort.”

This collaboration represents more than just a real estate development—it’s a commitment to creating a place where older adults can thrive, contribute, and find meaning in every stage of life.
